From Nautical Beginnings...

Roy Kellett Caravans Distributors was established in 1965 by Roy Kellett and remains a family owned business to this day.

Born in Formby, Merseyside, Roy attended Waterloo Grammar School, enrolling in The Marine & Navigational School in Aigburth after his exams. After his training Roy joined the merchant Navy in 1956 as a radio officer/purser with the famous Blue Funnel Steamship Line, based in Liverpool. After five years sailing the seven seas travelling as far a field as Yokohama & New York, Roy left the service and returned to help run his Father's caravan holiday park in Fleetwood.

However with a strong entrepreneurial drive, it wasn't long before Roy decided to form his own business investing his Navy savings in 6 caravan holiday homes on Robin Hood Holiday Park. After renting them for one season, he then sold them through newspaper advertisements across the North West.

After his first taste of caravan sales it wasn't long before Roy bought a small plot of land and opened his first caravan sales showground in Kinmel Bay.

'In the late 60's caravan sales were mostly controlled by the caravan parks themselves, who weren't able to offer a great choice of makes and models. My aim was to establish an independent caravan dealership, stocking a wide variety of caravan makes and models which consumers could choose to have on a wide variety of caravan parks across North Wales.' Roy explained.

After a successful 15 years trading, RKCD acquired Clwydian Caravans, Towyn, in 1980 and established the business as one of the leading caravan dealerships in the Wales and the UK.

Having turned 65 just recently, Roy looks back fondly over the last 40 years:

'There have been many changes since the days of gas mantles & solid fuel fires. Today's caravans provide all mod cons and the facilities available on parks are quite amazing too!'

In 2004 Roy decided to spend more time travelling and handed the day to day running of the business over to his daughter Debbie. However his entrepreneurial spirit remains as strong as ever, with Roy currently developing caravan parks in France, Portugal and Spain.
